let it be very clear that there are two types of diabetes
1. type I IDDM
2. type II NIDDM

type I or insulin dependant diabetes mellitus is caused by relative or absolute deficiency of insulin

type II or non IDDM is caused by decrease in insulin receptors in the body or its resistance. it is linked to obesity . it is usually not treated with insulin. there are certain drugs which reduce the absorption of carbs , these are used.

don't think to reduce insulin dependance, just follow what your doctor says, because the function of insulin is a very complex mechanism and it not only affects your carbohydrate metabolism but also fat, protein and many other things.

Cut out all of your carbohydrates (sugars), or as much as you possibly can. Exercise is one of the best ways to lower blood sugar, so exercise after meals, and you will have less of a need for insulin.

My dad is a diabetic on insulin, I am a diabetic who is so far avoiding the need for insulin.

1) Diet
2) Exercise
3) Insulin

The above three are standard of care for Diabetes Mellitus. The first two if used right and with good control - can totally eliminate the need of insulin.

*Be careful with exercise, its more of a long term (years to come) approach than a fast session. Slowly build your body on simple aerobics over the years!

Dragon fly is as wrong as possible. Insulin has nothing to do with the speed of your heart. Insulin is created in you pancreas. It helps move sugar from the blood into the cells. If youre pancreas makes NO insulin on its own, then you can never get off the insulin. If it just doesnt make enough, you can, like the other person said, eat less sugar/carbs which will decrease the amount of sugar in your blood, thus its possible you could get by without it

Exercising well to the extent possible reduces the need for INSULIN and breaks INSULIN RESISTANCE in type 2 (slightly over weight )diabetics.
