Does california have any sort of non-insured medication programs?!

Question:
I have a friend who needs some sort of state-funded medication program since he does not have insurance. Does anyone know anything about this--or if there are any such offers through colleges/universities?
Answers:
I had been suffering from the same situation, since I do not have medical insurance, and I am out of work on medical disability. My medications come to close to $500 a month, and who can afford that?? PLEASE have him go to www.pparx.org. Once on the site, it will direct you to what drug companies offer his medications. Fill out some VERY SIMPLE forms for those companies, have his doctor sign the forms and mail them off. I did this myself. I got approval within weeks from 2 of the companies that manufacture my medications, and am getting a years worth of my med's free of charge, saving me almost $400 a month. The only other thing I can suggest to try would be Medi-Cal, or you can try Healthy Families also.

From my own personal experience, I receive medication from a national drug company, Merck/Schering. They provide me with Vytorin for high cholestoral free of charge because my insurance doesn't cover that particular medication. I live in Tennessee. I went to my personal physician and filled out paperword regarding my income and stated that I do not have coverage. The doctor sent in the paperwork and I receive the medication in the mail. Hope that helps.)(

MediCal is what we have in California. It's the same as MedicAid, but we just call it by a different name. It's the free (or low-cost) care you get through the government. Tell your friend to look in the phone book under the local government listings for MediCal.
