What to do about bleeding gums?!

Question:
I used to smoke and my gums were all right. Now that I have given up smoking, gums have started to bleed. Is there a connection? What should I do?
Answers:
Get in to see your dentist for an evaluation. Hopefully the problem is simply gingivitis (the first stage of periodontal diseas) which can be reversed by having a cleaning at your dental office and maintaining good oral hygiene by brushing 2-3 times per day and flossing at least once per day. If it is a more advanced stage of periodontal disease your general dentist may opt to refer you to a periodontist. Good luck!

Other Answers:
Floss, brush 3 times a day, and see your dentist. You have gum disease.
Since there is a connection between gum disease and heart valve disease in early old-age, make SURE you see your dentist.

i rinsed with salted water three times a day and problem went away after one day. just like cooking, the smoke seals in the juices.

When you smoke it causes constriction of the blood vessels in the mouth (everywhere actually). Since you have stopped smoking they are back to normal. You have an active infection going on though if you have bleeding gums. Could be just gingivitis or you could have periodontal disease. Either way you need to see you dental hygienist for a good cleaning ASAP!!

(i am a hygienist, trust me!)
