I was recently bit by a spider, and I am trying to research what type of spider!

Question:
I believe I was bit on Friday, the 10th of March.. I was collecting rocks for school by a rocky river bed. I noticed 2 blisters on my calf on saturday afternoon, with no pain or irritation. By the 3rd Day, the blisters had become ulcerous and painful, with a lot of inflammation, so I went to a doctor, and he gave me antibiotic and offered to cut it out for cheap. The next day, I showed it to my Anatomy and Physiology Teacher, and he recognized mild necrosis and recommended I get another opinion. It has now been 2 weeks, and the ulcers alternate between soggy and scabbed over about every 4 days, and it is still quite inflamed and painful. I have narrowed it down to probably a hobo spider or a wolf spider, but both can give these SX so if you have any suggestions I would really appreciate any advice. Thanks for your time.

Sounds to me like a Brown Recluse Spider bite. Not something to play around with. Usually the skin will rot away around the bite. Keep an eye on it and if you are really concerned check back with your doctor. keep in mind if you didn't see what bit you then it may not have been a spider at all. Perhaps a snake especially with 2 marks.

Good luck!!

From the symptoms you are experiencing, i would think it is a Brown Recluse Spider, very common in areas like you were in. They are sometimes referred to as the violin or fiddleback spider because of the violin-shaped marking on its dorsum.

In nature, brown recluse spiders live outdoors under rocks, logs, woodpiles and debris. The spider is also well adapted to living indoors with humans. They are resilient enough to withstand winters in unheated basements and stifling summer temperatures in attics, persisting many months without food or water. The brown recluse hunts at night seeking insect prey, either alive or dead. It does not employ a web to capture food -- webs strung along walls, ceilings, outdoor vegetation, and in other exposed areas are nearly always associated with other types of spiders.

The initial bite is usually painless. Oftentimes the victim is unaware until 3 to 8 hours later when the bite site may become red, swollen, and tender. The majority of brown recluse spider bites remain localized, healing within 3 weeks without serious complication or medical intervention. In other cases, the victim may develop a necrotic lesion, appearing as a dry, sinking bluish patch with irregular edges, a pale center and peripheral redness. Often there is a central blister. As the venom continues to destroy tissue, the wound may expand up to several inches over a period of days or weeks. The necrotic ulcer can persist for several months, leaving a deep scar. Infrequently, bites in the early stages produce systemic reactions accompanied by fever, chills, dizziness, rash or vomiting. Severe reactions to the venom are more common in children, the elderly, and patients in poor health. Persons bitten by a brown recluse spider should apply ice, elevate the affected area, and seek medical attention immediately.

i hate spiders!

First: I agree w/ your teacher get a second opinion
second: with the description it might very well be a brown recluse, which if not caught soon could destroy your skin..

Well you need to get medical attention immediately , my 2 1/2 year old son was bit before he turned 2 and it was horrible . the er doctor told me it was a flea bite and he kept getting worse after the 4 th day he was running a high uncontrolable fever so i took him to a different hospital 35 miles away and they seen him in the er and it costed 1,600 to get the tissue cut out and the worst part was they could not wait a secound longer to give him pain med they just went at it . because they were scared it was in the blood stream . he had a huge red spot with purple and brown and black center and the greeen crud was pouring out when they cut into it . it was awful and now he is doing just fine and has a small scar sunk in the arm . but i am so glad we took him for a secound oppinion.
