I guess that depends on how high it is (as well as your other symptoms). The normal range is about 4 to 10. If you are talking a little elevated (maybe up to 20), it might be a run of the mill infection. Above 20 and below 50 could be a serious infection--or it could be cancer as well. If it's extremely high, like say 50+ then you may have to seriously consider a leukemia (cancer).

increased white blood count may indicate alot of things that why doctors perform another investigation which is known as differential. this test may show which particular component of the WBC (neutrophils-eosinphils-lympho. and the % of each component may indicate a cause for the increase. but , god forbid, another cause of increased WBC count is leukemia (which is the malignancy of the WBC) and many tests will be performed if this diagnosis is suspected.

I have non-reactive leukocytosis (elevated WBC between 14.0 and 16.8). Have been through many tests to include bone marrow biopsy which showed the bone marrow is producing too many white blood cells. As of this date they have not found a reason for the elevated count, hence non-reactive. I haven't a clue and work in healthcare with the very physicians that have been unable to diagnose this. I don't have a clue either but as long as it is non-reactive and the big CA doesn't present, I'll live with it. Good luck.
