What exactly is herpes,is it treatable, can it be cured.?!

Question:

Answers:
Oral herpes, an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus, is estimated to be present in 50 to 80 percent of the American adult population. 20 percent, over 50 million people, are infected with genital herpes, also caused by the herpes simplex virus, and the majority of these cases may be unaware they even have it. Studies show that more than 500,000 Americans are diagnosed with genital herpes each year, and the largest increase is occurring in young teens.
There is no cure for herpes to date. Supporting your immune system should be your first goal. A weakened immune system is more prone to outbreaks. Efforts to develop a herpes vaccine by biotechnology companies are ongoing. Until an effective herpes vaccine or cure for HSV infection is found, the prevailing approach to treatment continues to be suppressive antiviral therapy.

Other Answers:
Herpes are open sores. They are treatable as in keeping the outbreaks to a minimum, but they are not curable. They spread very easily.

I understand that herpes is not curable, but here are some things that are supposed to help with the symptoms-

Herpes, or the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) exist in two different strains HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both viruses produce small canker-like sores in the infected areas.

HSV-1 is also called Oral Herpes, while HSV-2 is also called Genital Herpes. However, either version can affect any part of the body, though moist areas as most likely to be infected. It is possible to get and spread HSV-2 orally, or HSV-1 through sexual fluids. The important thing to remember is that any bodily fluids from an infected area can transmit the infection.

HSV in either form can remain dormant, and outbreaks can be small enough that people do not realize they are experiencing them. That is why it is possible to transmit the disease accidentally.

Both forms can be treated to reduce the severity and frequency of symptom outbreaks. However, there is not currently a cure, nor is there a way (short of avoiding contact with the infected areas) to eliminate risk of passing on the infection.
