Doans or Tylenol will help with the pain if there is no type of inflammation. If you have inflammation you would need ibuprofen such as Aleve or Motrin. You will need to see which best addresses and relieves your pain.
The best over the counter medicine for any pain is Tylenol Arthritis. It helped me with body aches and was the only thing that helped stop the pain from getting my wisdom teeth cut out (presc. pain meds make me sick).
It works fast and lasts well. I have recommended it to my friends/family and they really like it.
Being an alternative medicinal therapist I treat this kind of problem every day. Where is the pain? Top Middle or Bottom. Are you sure it's just a backache? it may a kidney infection, do you suffer from cystitis.Are you constipated?
Do you lift a lot? How old are you? Do you suffer with headaches? All these are signs that another problem is the cause of your backache. If you must take over the counter medications the most strongest one i know is CODEINE or Nurofen PLUS (codeine + ibuprofen) but you must eat something before you take it or it may cause your stomach to bleed and all painkillers aggravate the liver and Ibuprofen is very bad for you anyway.. If you must take them please get yourself 'milk thistle' capsules, they help to minimise the effects of these pills on the liver. You get Milk Thistle at your local health shop. I never prescribe my patients with any painkillers. They all have herbal or massage and/or acupressure therapy and it Works.

It's really strange but when my husband has back pain, we uses women's Tylenol. I keep some in the house just for him.
