Answers:
REPRESSION means to HOLD BACK. DEPRESSION MEANS to HOLD DOWN. My personal observation is that when a person is unable to fulfill themselves and grow (spiritually), then they are held down.i.e., they are not rising. The word SPIRITUALLY has nothing to do with religion. It means : the part of a person which defines them individualistically. When we are not able to explore our true nature, use our talents, become the best we can be at what we do best, we SINK.
Chemical Imbalance is a term coined by pharmaceudical companies in order to make people agree to take pills. If the pharmaceudical companies told people they were mentally ill, people would reject the dianosis and not return to the doctor. There are no scientific studies which prove chemical imbalances for mental illnesses. Depression is not a chemical imbalance.

they say it could be a chemical imbalance, but I also believe that sad things happen to people - losing loved ones, jobs, etc. that can bring on depression.

There are 2 types of depression. One is you just feel down for a few days because life is not going the way you had hoped. It will ago away on it's own - see friends, go to park or movies. The second is clinical depression & caused by a chemical imbalance. It needs to be medicated & will last until medicated. With this there is usually nothing wrong in your life just a general feeling of sadness & unworthiness. Both can go away!

hi yes a definition is a plug with no fuse.there all millions ov explanations and types but the most comman is the brains lack ov the chemical seroton which is naturally there/therefore tablets r used 2 create it or so were lead 2 believe.another reason is stress/imagen your brain is a computer yeah if 1 ov the wires is snapped or cut it wont work and thats what can happen in the brain too.hope that helps.

There is a whole series of depressive disorders listed in the DSM. Specifically, the requirements for a Major Depressive Episode serve as the best answer for what depression really is. The requirements are
(A) 5 or more of the following are present for a period of 2 weeks, and this represents a change from previous levels of functioning:
1. depressed mood for most of the day, nearly every day
2. a markedly decrease in interest in pleasure in all, or almost all activities for most of the day
3. Significant loss in weight when not dieting, or weight gain, or decrease or increase in appetite
4. insomnia or hypersomnia
5. psychomotor agitation, or retardation
6. fatigue, or loss of energy every day
7. feelings of worthlessness or excessive inappropriate guilt
8. diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness
9. recurrent thoughts of death, and or recurrent thoughts of suicide, with or without a plan.
(B) The Symptoms do not meet the criterion for Mixed Episode
(C) The symptoms cause clinically significant stress or impairment in social occupational, or other areas of thinking
(D) The symptoms are not better accounted for Bereavement, morbid preoccupation with worthlessness, suicidal ideation, psychotic symptoms, or psychomotor retardation.

All of these symptoms displayed over a longer period of time adequately sum what depression is. Particularly Criterion A and C. C is important because it makes the point that is becomes a real problem when it interferes with your day to day lifestyle.

As far as what causes depression, many studies point to a neuroreceptor binding issue, particularly that of Serotonin (or 5HT). To send a signal from brain cell to brain cell, the cells use chemicals called neurotransmitters to create an electrical signal. One of the classes of these chemicals are called monoamines. 5HT is a monoamine. The problem occurs when the 5HT does not stick to the cell that is receiving the signal. Three major classes of drugs have been developed to solve this problem, they are :
1. Monoamine Inhibiters (MAOI's) - These stop a drug that breaks down 5HT after it is used, this way, it hangs around longer, increasing the chances that it binds.
2. Tricyclic Antidepressants - These block a process known as re-uptake that reabsorbs 5HT into the cell that sent the signal, the problem is that they also block Dopamine and Norepinephrine re-uptake.
3. Selective Seretonin Re-uptake Inhibiters (SSRI's) These are considered the best. They do exactly the same thing as the MAOI's but they do not block Dopamine and norepinephrine re-uptake. These are marketed as Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Luvox, and Celexa.

Side effects sometimes occur because these chemicals are used in other parts of the body and the brain and with other systems in the body. That is why Doctors sometimes change medicines and amounts to find something that works just right for you, because individual biochemistry varies.

I hope this adequately answers your question.

A depressive disorder is an illness that involves the body, mood, and thoughts. It affects the way a person eats and sleeps, the way one feels about oneself, and the way one thinks about things. A depressive disorder is not the same as a passing blue mood. It is not a sign of personal weakness or a condition that can be willed or wished away. People with a depressive illness cannot merely "pull themselves together" and get better. Without treatment, symptoms can last for weeks, months, or years. Appropriate treatment, however, can help most people who suffer from depression.
