How important is it for families to visit relatives in long term care facilities!

Question:
I am trying to find information about this for a speech, personal experiences could be helpful as well as information from credentials.
Answers:
It's very important. Imagine being abandoned by people you loved & cared for all your life just when you need them most. My grandmother was in a nursing home for several years & she was fortunate to have many visitors but it was sad to see how many people never got any. Yes, visiting the facility was smelly & depressing but it was where she lived. Her roommate never got visitors & one day she decided to stop eating. She was gone soon after. The nurses said it was not uncommon.

My mother is in long term care and I know that she gets very lonely. I have gone in there and she cries when I have to leave. It is heartbreaking. Just hugs and touches makes her feel so much better. There are so many people in this facility that have no one to come and see them. I believe it helps with their cognitive abilities. Also when they have a feeling that someone is still there for support their health is much better.

It is extremely important. The staff tend to take better care of those residents whom they know will be visiting and those who make inquires such as weight loss.Go to a nursing home and observe for yourself.
