Answers:
I have been taking Premarin .0625 for almost 2 years since my hysterectomy. I am only in early 40s. My doctor said I need to be on HRT because of my young age. My mom (mid 60s) also has been on Premarin since her hysterectomy at age 26. She went off it on her own when medical coverage stopped. Her doctor made her go back on because he said she would have worse medical problems without it. Talk to your doctor and listen to his/her explanation. Or ask your pharmacist for information.

Other Answers:
After a hysterectomy your body may not produce enough hormones to keep you from going into the shock of menopause. Premarin is a strong conjugated estrogen suppliment, and when you are on any hormone therapy, you should have your blood levels checked periodically. There are other hormone producing glands in your body and brain that can begin to function, they may actually produce enough hormones to mean that your dosage of Estrogen can be reduced. Have your hormone levels checked. There are many arguements for HRT "Hormone Replacement Therapy" and many arguements against it. If you are a smoker, that is a serious consideration, it can make some of the side effects of HRT more dangerous.

As for Premarin, the drug. Well it's name can be broken down to tell you exactly what it is: Pre= Pregnant Mar= Mare's In= Urine. This is NOT a cruelty free drug, it is collected from Pregnant Mares (horses) that are kept in concrete stalls and deprived of water (so as to make their Urine more Hormone potent).they are strapped with belly bags to collect their Urine, and often their offspring are taken directly to a rendering plant to be destroyed. When the mares are able to be impregnated again, they are artificially inseminated, and once again they live out their pregnancy in a concrete stall with a urine bag attached to them to make Premarin and other products that are usually prefaced with "Pre" it comes in various delivery methods, pills, paste, vaginal rings etc.I personally think the drug company that produces the drug pays all gyno docs to put their hysterectomy patients on the drug without discussing it with them first.

I was horrified when I did some simple internet research and I told my doctor that I would prefer taking a plant based estrogen product like "estrace". When the doctor did the tests to determine the dosage with the new drug he found that my hormone level was WAY too high anyway. I was in the hormonal level of a woman on fertility treatments (instead of a women who had a hysterectomy!) Over doses of Estrogen can cause all kinds of nasty health problems, blood clots, increased chance of breast cancer etc.

I am on no hormone therapy now. I still feel and look like a woman, and I notice I do not have as much anxiety or moody times as I was having or headaches. For me, it was time to stop taking hormones, my body is producing some of it's own natural hormones now, and I feel better.

Here's a website where you can read about Premarin, you have to make your own health decisions, and every woman is unique.

Good luck and good health to you.
