Answers:
my firend (also had collapsed lung) used to do the controlled breathing excersises. Not sure exactly how it was done, but basically breathe in slowly, deeply for a set time (like 7 seconds) holding for a second, then exhaling slowly for a set time. His docotr would know what will work best for him. YOu can find all sorts of help and advise to prepare you for doctor visits at:

Other Answers:
Walking. Start slow, and as you gain cardiovascular function, go a little faster, a little longer. Best of luck to you and your loved one.

If he/she isn't walking yet, just simple stretching can increase lung capacity a little bit.

And yes, ask the dr. They usually know more than strangers.

check with your doctor

Your Dr. will probably advise you in some sort of sustained maximal inhalation. The most common form is the incentive spirometer. These are commonly given to patients after surgery to improve their respiratory volumes. It is a device that measures the volume that you inhale, and has visual markings to show how much you inhale, and usually has an adjustable "target" for patients to try to achieve.
