Does it really take a million years for 1 diaper to disintigrate?!

Question:
My teacher told me (5th grade) so a while ago that if you take all the diapers in the world that are dirty you can reach the moon! and she said it was fact! she also said that it takes a million years for ONE!! Just ONE diaper to disitigrate!!??!! is this Fact or Ficiton?
Answers:
no, it's more like 50 - 70 years, i used to work in a plastics plant recycling plastics. that's what they told us. yes diapers are made of plastic, we ground them up and melted them down. they were scraps from the manufacturing, not used ones lol

Other Answers:
A million years is a guess. As in "not true."

no way dude thats the dumbest thing ive eveer heard

I've heard it is about 500 years, which is still pretty bad. Always use towelling nappies!

Wow! She must be REALLY old! I don't think so.

It is not fact, because - of course - no one has been able to do that experiement. However, a calculation of the rate of disentigration can give an accurate estimate of the time it could take and it may very well be a whole lot of years.

None of us know for sure since we haven't been around that long! It will definitely take far past our grandchildrens' lives for a diaper to disintegrate.

She is talking what always ends up in diapers...

Is this a diaper made from Plutonium? A Chernobyl diaper? No actually the stuff diapers are filled with naturally - contains bacteria. The bacteria breaks down just about anything given time. the messier the diaper - the quicker it'll breakdown. In fact fill a large hole full of diapers and the bacteria will produce methane gas. Tap in to that in 10 to 20 years time and you can have a diaper fuelled power station - in theory. You can then dig it all up and grow tomato plants in the compost - that's a bi-product. No idea what the tomatoes taste like.

From England's green and pleasant land.

Disposable diapers do not even begin to disintegrate until they have been in the ground 500 years or more.
