Parents?

Not feeling loved by their parents is the number one reason.

Okay, medically the "cause" of depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain that prevents serotonin and/or dopamine to be utilized correctly.
I get the impression that's not really what you are looking for in your question. While there are many things that can contribute to or are correlated with depression, it can't be said to "cause" depression.
For example, while a kid whose parents are divorcing can become depressed, this doesn't mean all kids whose parents are divorcing will become depressed. It really annoys me when a person finds out that a kid is from "a broken home" and assumes that this kid is "messed up".
So..there are many situations that may, understandably, leave a kid feeling depressed. However, the SEVERITY and LENGTH of the depression is often a part of how long the situation has lasted, the level of conflict involved (i.e. in their parents marriage), how much opportunity the kid has to talk about their feelings, how much support (even outside the family) the kid has in working through their situation/depression, how mentally healthy their parents/guardians are (are they working through their own depression?), and is their substance abuse involved (for the kid or their parents/guardians).
I'm sure there are other factors, but it's really not just a simple X causes Y situation.

Check out the American Psychological Association web-site at: www.apa.org. Also, check into your county's children's mental health web-site or call them.

there are multiple coping styles that go back to the human's survival programing, anxiety, depression, violence are the main three. If you ask anyone that has clinical depression they will say that there was a big shock into their life before they went into depression. It doesn't really even have to be that big of a shock to set off the chemical imbalance. Don't think that it is all your fault. Just get him the help wether it is medication and/or counciling.
