Where do dreams come from, and why do we have them?!

Question:

Answers:
Some researchers believe that during sleep the brain "replays" its recent memories in order to solidify the synaptic changes between neurons. This is like repeating a phone number out loud until you know it by heart, only the brain does it automatically when you sleep. An electro-encephalo-gram (EEG) shows major electric, slow moving waves that are characteristic (delta waves and others) of deep sleep and may signify such systematic, widespread rythmical electric activity.

The dreams are thought to be the by-product of this procedure. Obviously, they can be influenced by both memories, especially recent ones, and stimuli (e.g. pain during sleep can cause nightmares).

You may want to check the "Insight" section in the "Nature" issue linked below, although I have not read it thoroughly. Be prepared, though, "Nature" is a very high end scholarly publication and the articles could be hard to read.

Half of the times it might be a message from God telling u something

I don't believe dreams will ever be explained accurately by science. I do have a theory though. Dreams are caused by thoughts we've had, most notably the thoughts we have just before going to sleep. Maybe it's even possible to control your dreams. I might try it tonight. I'm gonna do everything I can tonight to dream about the woman I love. It'll be tricky though because I have to make sure that I don't let my thoughts drift away from that while sliding into sleepyland. As for having dreams I think it's the brain's way of staying alert while we sleep.
