What is wrong with my friend?!

Question:
I met my friend, Angel, 12 years ago when we were about 8. She was always the most normal person I knew. She always had great grades, went to school almost everyday, had good relationships with friends and family - had good relationships with boyfriends and if there was a break up it was always amicable. I know a lot about depression and mental disorders, spending a lot of time in a pshyciatric ward when I was a kid and family history but I don't know what could be wrong with Angel.for the past year she's been acting weird, once every few months she gets severly depressed - she doesn't want to talk or speak to anyone, she does drugs and drinks, she cuts herself and will go back to an old boyfriend and enjoys it when he hurts her - she begs him to beat and rape her, one time he even let two of his friends have their way with her and she never said a word. These pshycotic breaks only last one to three days then everything goes back to normal like nothing happened.

This could be caused by many different types of illness. Angel definitly needs professional help, and if you can get her seen while in one of her "episodes" it would be better.

The depression followed by the bizarre behaviors could be signs of bipolar disorder, if she is around 20, that would be approximately the right age of onset of full blown symptoms. The cutting suggests internal pain.

Her lack of memory of the occurences is also concerning to me. This shows either she is at a manic phase with possible psychotic symptoms or could be showing signs of a dissociative phase as well.

If you are close to Angel's family, talk to them and get them to help you. If you think that they will not believe you then you need to contact a crisis hotline or psychiatric emergency program to assist in getting Angel evaluated while in an "episode".

You can find a crisis center by calling the American Association of Suicidology during business hours at 1-800-273-8255 between 9-5 Eastern Time. A crisis center is not just for suicide.

Dang, does she have family?

Try manic depression. Or maybe she had a traumatic experience that she is trying exorcise by allowing this trashing of her body.

If you find out what is wrong, is there a way you can get her help?
Maybe you can skip the finding out part and just get her to the folks who will help her?

I hope she heals quickly.

Wow that’s not good. You’re a good friend for trying to help her. Some people need bad thing to go on in there life to keep them balanced. I know its crappie but it happens. She needs to get professional help and the sooner the better. Good luck.

Please talk with a professional about this. It could be borderline?

Your friend sounds like a (masacist) not sure on the spelling. They are people who enjoy pain.It generally stems from depression & they can become suicidal. Her self destructive behavior is not safe. Get her help!!

Sounds like she should see a mental health professional. Abrupt behaviour changes such as you describe *may* indicate severe sexual and/or physical abuse and possible maladaptive attempts to cope with the residual pain from these experiences.

How sad. It sounds to me like she has been extremely hurt by someone in the past, like a father or father-figure.? Maybe she is acting act in these promiscuous ways because of that.

How is her relationship with her father? Is he around? Has she openly ever told you anything negative about the way he has treated her in the past?

She is deeply scarred and needs professional help right away!
