Believe it or not, it's water. Drinking more water helps cut cravings of any addiction. There's "medical" reasons for it, but I can't recall exactly how it works, but it has something to do with your body being able to identify what it is that it needs, and water helps those senses stay sharp and not to ask for the wrong thing.

Here are my two most important rules.

1. NEVER start at night!
That is when your urge will be the greatest.
Promise yourself honestly that if you MUST have a cigarette you can have it tomorrow morning. You have gone this long.surely you can get through 1 more night.
(In the morning.even though you can.you will be so proud of yourself for getting through the night you won't have that cigarette.)
2. Don't tell yourself you will NEVER smoke again. If you think this.you will be smoking in no time.
Instead tell yourself you will not smoke until the end of the summer. Labor Day for example.
On Labor Day.make the decision if you want to continue not smoking until New Years. Tell yourself.If you want to make a New Years Resolution to be a smoker.fine.
You will more likely resolve to NOT smoke.

Brush teeth immediately after eating. Three days is a great start. Don't drink any booze it will weaken your resolve. Avoid smoking situations.
Most importantly, when the urge hits and you want to bum one or buy some, make yourself wait 6 minutes and the urge will subside to a manageable level. For the first two weeks DO NOT imagine being a non smoker, just take each day without smoking as a small victory.

I also admitted that I loved to smoke but knew it was killing me. Hang in there.
