my fiance smokes to this day and I make him brush for 2 minutes FLOSS and use listerine the blue kind. makes it minty fresh I am not a smoker and I hate the ashtray smell as well but that seems to do the trick good luck.

Doctors can actually prescribe an medicine spray for bad breath. You can probably find similiar over the counter.
Ask a pharmacist at a local drug store.

if he really quit i will take a day or two. he may need to have a dental scaling and polishing.

hmm.. i don't think there's any way for you to get rid of it. you smoked for 13 years, try to have your chest radiograph and see your condition. having lung problem is irreversible, i don't know how old you are but in 10 years, a possibiity of lung cancer may occur. in 13 years, if don't experience any yet, still nicotine had invaded your lungs and could no longer fight it back. you breathe with your lungs, your lungs have a considerable amount of nicotine or whatever product of cigarette in it.. in short, that ashtray smell comes from your lungs, not from your mouth, and there's no other way you can stop that. stop smoking so that your lungs will be relieved. in 5-10 years, there will be a difference..=)

take that from me. i'm a dentist!

I think he hasn't stop smoking because his breath shouldn't be smelling like an ashtray. Tell him to brush with toothpaste and baking soda and use mouthwash.
