does gastric by-pass really work?!

Question:
Am considering gastric by-pass surgery. I'm wondering if anyone out there has had it done and what I can expect.
Answers:
I haven't had it (yet) but I've done a lot of research and have a blog about it.
Go to the Obesity Help site which is all about weight loss surgery. You can find doctors and people who've had surgery and all kinds of great information and it's all free.

My aunt has had gastric bypass. I would say she lost about 40-50 pounds in about two months. However, she cannot eat the foods she used to love. She gets dizzy from malnutrition and has to make sure she takes a handful of vitamins every day. If eating is important to you, this is not the surgery for you. You'll lose weight but you can only eat cupfuls of food.

If you really want to lose weight, gradually change your diet. Eat whole wheat bread instead of white bread. Cut down on the sweets. Cut down the fast food and eat at healthier places. Think to yourself: Should I really be eating this? Go to the gym or track and walk a little bit. As your endurance increases, increase the intensity of your walking. Hope this helps.

It does as i am proof of. I lost 165 pounds and went from barely able to walk up a flight of stairs to running 4 marathons and numerous triathlons. Having said that.

Most people who get it done are not really ready for it. The failure rate is huge (can't recal the number I last heard). The reason it fails is that the patient is still the same person inside after the surgery as they were before the surgery. Many morbidly obese people got that way from emotional problems. Just because you loose the weight doesn't mean the emotional problem goes away.

And yes, that is true for me as well. I am a stress eater. My success is due to my comitment to change my behaviour. I still want to eat all the time when I am unhappy, etc but now I know the warning signs and take action to rechannel the self destructive behaviour. That is probably why I am so into sports now.

As for food portions, no big deal. After a year or so your stomache gets a bit bigger and you find yourself eating "normal" portions. Face it, we are all programmed to eat a lot more than we need. Also, I am able to eat everything.no restrictions. The first year you spend adjusting to a new body.the rules are different.

Bottom line, this is NOT a quick fix but merely a second chance to get control of your life.

Good luck.and God bless your journey!

Yes, it works very well. My mom had the surgery and she's lost over 120 pounds so far. If you want to get it done, do a lot of research and see if you are willing to change your life like that. Check with a doctor to see if your a good candidate. Once you get the surgery your food will me cut down a lot. For the first couple of months you cannot eat more than a 1/2 cup per meal. Then you will work your way up to about a cup per meal. You can't eat sugar anymore. Since your stomach is smaller, the digestion doesn't take place in the stomach, so the sugar goes right through you, causing horrible stomach pains called "dumping" I've watched my mother go through it a couple of times and it looks painful. Also since your stomach is smaller everything must be chewed up to a applesauce consistency to help the digestive process in the small intestines. Honestly don't let this scare you, for some people it saves their life. Do your research. I know that there is a gastric by-pass website out there. I don't remember what it is but i know there is one. Good Luck!!
