Is there a cure for autism?!

Question:
Autism, is is a disease?
Answers:
That depends who you ask. Many parents will tell you that their children "used to be autistic" and that through vitamin therapy, chelation and oxygen therapy they were cured.

If you ask your average pediatrician, they will tell you that there isn't even any TREATMENT for autism, let alone a cure. But then, most doctors don't want to admit that heavy metal toxicity, or vacinations have anything to do with it. (Most doctors won't admit zinc helps a cold..)

Of course doctors want people to fear chelation- for the same reason they want you to fear vitamins and herbs- THEY, AND THE INSURANCE COMPANIES AREN'T MAKING ANY MONEY FROM IT!

Ask an informed parent of an autistic child, and they're likely to tell you "Of course there's a cure. It's called the DAN! Protocol."

Other Answers:
some say chelation therapy is a cure, but it is also very risky.

There is no cure yet,but there are some treatments and methods that help to take the symptoms away.

no

No, there is no cure for autism but therapy and medication can make it easier for the autistic person and their family to live. It is a condition that triggers personality and behvioural disorders and can be severe (rocking, no speech, rain man etc) to very mild ( quirky personality traits).
The best thing to do is extensive therapy as unless the person is a danger to him/herself and/ or others, medication isnt really necessary.
Just alot of love and patience and hard work and you get there eventually.

There is no known cure for autism. There is also no proven cause. The effects of autism can be mitigated using a number of methods, many of which are "non invasive" in nature and tend to attempt to moderate behavior and such. Autism is also a "spectrum" disorder, meaning there are varying levels of severity. Children and adults afflicted with Asperger's Syndrome or PDD tend to do poorly in social situations but are otherwise normal in function. Other points on the curve are more severe. I would be extremely cautious of any chemical treatments or other "holistic" healing. Since the cause for autism is not yet known, any treatment is subjective in nature. The term "disease" is specific in nature and identifies a known agent afflicting the human body. Therefore, by definition, autism is not a disease.

Autism Spectrum Disorders (Pervasive Developmental Disorders)

Autism is a Disorder not a disease

Not until the middle of the twentieth century was there a name for a disorder that now appears to affect an estimated one of every five hundred children, a disorder that causes disruption in families and unfulfilled lives for many children. In 1943 Dr. Leo Kanner of the Johns Hopkins Hospital studied a group of 11 children and introduced the label early infantile autism into the English language. At the same time a German scientist, Dr. Hans Asperger, described a milder form of the disorder that became known as Asperger syndrome. Thus these two disorders were described and are today listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-IV-TR (fourth edition, text revision)1 as two of the five pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), more often referred to today as autism spectrum disorders (ASD). All these disorders are characterized by varying degrees of impairment in communication skills, social interactions, and restricted, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior.

The autism spectrum disorders can often be reliably detected by the age of 3 years, and in some cases as early as 18 months.2 Studies suggest that many children eventually may be accurately identified by the age of 1 year or even younger. The appearance of any of the warning signs of ASD is reason to have a child evaluated by a professional specializing in these disorders.

Parents are usually the first to notice unusual behaviors in their child. In some cases, the baby seemed "different" from birth, unresponsive to people or focusing intently on one item for long periods of time. The first signs of an ASD can also appear in children who seem to have been developing normally. When an engaging, babbling toddler suddenly becomes silent, withdrawn, self-abusive, or indifferent to social overtures, something is wrong. Research has shown that parents are usually correct about noticing developmental problems, although they may not realize the specific nature or degree of the problem.

The pervasive developmental disorders, or autism spectrum disorders, range from a severe form, called autistic disorder, to a milder form, Asperger syndrome. If a child has symptoms of either of these disorders, but does not meet the specific criteria for either, the diagnosis is called pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS). Other rare, very severe disorders that are included in the autism spectrum disorders are Rett syndrome and childhood disintegrative disorder. This brochure will focus on classic autism, PDD-NOS, and Asperger syndrome, with brief descriptions of Rett syndrome and childhood disintegrative disorder on the following page. (see link below)
