Are chronic nightmares a symptom of a specific mental disorder?!

Question:
I am 27, and was diagnosed with major depressive disorder very young. I have had nothing but nightmares my whole life. I am terrified of sleeping. Somebody help.
Answers:
First, yes, nightmares MAY be a symptom of a specific disorder, known as posttruamatic stress disorder (PTSD). You should get a second opinion on your diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder, especially if your diagnosis was made by a physician or psychiatrist. I'm not saying that you are misdiagnosed but there is a possibility you have. You should seek out a doctoral level psychologist (Ph.D. or Psy.D.). Psychologists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health problems and most affective disorders (professional lingo for disorders having to do with emotional problems of anxiety and depression) the optimal treatment is usual a talk therapy called cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). If you have major depressive disorder the optimal treatment is a combination of drug therapy plus CBT. If you end up being diagnosed with PTSD, then the optimal treatment is CBT alone. If you are terrified of sleeping, you probably have PTSD or something referred to as night terrors. Use the website below to find a psychologist in your area.

it's not necessiarly a sympton of a specific mental disorder. It could have some metaphorical meaning. But it might have something to do with a disorder. not quite sure.

That is actually still a major debate among doctors and scientists.

No its not. Sounds like you are worry a lot. when you are comfortable with whatever worries you or scares you, these nightmares will begin to go away. And the less sleep you have, the more of the nightmares you will get hun. YOU NEED TO RELAX!

Night mares are usually due to unresolved issues in your life. Not exactly what you see in the nitemare, but similiar. You have to compare each of the things in your dream to something in your life and try and figure out what is causing you to keep it bottled up. I would be interested to know what one of your dreams was I like to figure those out. wingedlayk@yahoo.com

No. They are a symptom of unresolved anxiety. The anxiety can be treated with medicines. Do be aware that certain prescription medicines can cause an increase in very vivid dreams. Talk to your pharmacist as well as your doctor about the nightmares. A simple medication change may be all that's needed. Otherwise, anti-anxiety medicines like alprazolam are worth a try.

you now you are depressed and that is all you ned to know. don't bother trying to get the fabcy name for what is wrong with you. focus on the problem: you have nighmares and you want to stop having them

have you ever tries self hipnoses? i do this all the time. before you go to sleep.lie in your bed, with 2/3 pillows under your head. put a candle on a table by your feet and so that you can look comfortable at it.lights must be out
1. close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.clear your mind
2. look at the candle.just look, dont think.
3. when you close your eyes again. think of your favourite colour.one that makes you calm and fulfill you
4. open your eyes and try to imagine the whole room filled with that colour and the light of the candle
5. close your eyes again.imagine yourself floating.feel your entire body. then begin with your feet-see them floating away.to this with all your body parts from boddom to top until all is gone.you will be completely relaxed by now
6. your on top of 20 stairs.they are made of wood and you can smell it. walk them.counting each one.feel how you are walking, smell the freash wood air
7. when you come to the bottom, there is a door open it and walk into the white room. it is empty and there you will work on yourself
8. there you will tell yourself positive thing:
- I am going to have a nice peacefull sleep
- i am going to feel lively when I wake
- I have the ability to work through everything that is bothering me
etc etc
9. climb the 20 stairs up again.open your eyes.
do that for how long it takes until the nightmares are gone. I promise you.you're life won't be the same again

Not that i can explain in a nut shell the whole theory behind it, but try acupuncture. It could well help.
