Try the book Marthoning for Mortals by John Bingham. It has lots of helpful advice and training plans for beginners.

Other Answers:
Get an exercise bike and a TV that way you can practice for hours and not get bored. Or just get a good Gold's Gym membership.

You realize you'll have to quit smoking, right?

try hard with confidence

Start small, real small, run for 1 minute on day one, 4 minutes on day 2, build up to 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour over a period of 6 months.

You will need a good shoe, allocated time, a proper diet and sleep in order to aid in recovery.

Walk, jog or run every other day.

At age 47 you are looking at a 5 hour target for the marathon. Good luck.

Well, I wouldn't start exercising by running a marathon right out of the cage! Start slowly and build up wind and endurance. (and muscles.do some strength training along with the running). At 47, you are in your prime, will have no problems.but have a full physical with a stress test FIRST! I don't need to find you along the street in the middle of a heart attack. If you have been sedentary for some time, check it all out before such an ambitious project.
