Female Periods?!

Question:
Why do Girls start there periods at SUCH a young age when they are Obviously WAY TOO young to have children!? I mean if there are menstrating, then they are ovulating and woman only have cetain number of eggs that they are born with, so why would "mother nature" start girls so young and waste ALL those eggs!?? Should they be harvested for them letter on in life then??
Answers:
In our modern society, 10/11/12 is a young age to have children, but when life expectancy was much less, young girls were married by the age of 13 and had children around that age too. Going back down the evolutionary ladder, female animals have the capacity to reproduce from an early age because they are not expected to live long and have to fight to survive and procreate efficiently in order to ensure the survival of their species (good old Darwin). To flip the question, why do boy's balls drop *ahem* (apologies for the phrasing, i dont know the medical term) so early, when socially, they shouldnt be fathers until much later. It's all because the ideology of our society doesnt necessarily fit our biological destinies. That's why we are higher than animals - because we have the ability to escape our biological destinies and go after/create other things.

To digress even more, a major reason why women now live longer is because of the invention of reliable birth control (and its acceptance in society). In the past, women died earlier because they were constantly pregnant. Many gave birth and then became pregnant again 2 or 3 months later. My great grandma died from the strain of having 13 children in as many years for example.

In reply to 'pullmyfinger' who said that 'I would say that it is the hormones in the foods that WE eat. It's not "mother nature"' that makes girls start their periods earlier and earlier: perhaps it is that we are now having fuller diets - there is less child malnutrition in the developed world now. Our ten year olds are generally bigger and stronger than the ten year olds of the 1600s, thats why girls are starting their periods earlier perhaps. Our diets may not be healthy because of all the processed stuff, but our bodies are growing faster because we have more generally.

why do you care?

u dumd butt?? why do u ask that ??
can i as ksomethin g ok why are u dumb butt??

weird question for a young guy-i would ask also why do you care?

in the old days when people's life spans were much shorter they had children much earlier in life.

unless you are in danger of impregnating one of these menstruating children, what does it matter?

Women used to get married at 13. People were considered adults at younger ages because life expectancy was much shorter. Should they be harvested? Do you think we are plants? We stop menstrating at a certain age for a reason. After a certain age women's bodies are not healthy enough to have children.

If your worried about your daughter getting pregnant the best thing you can do it teach her! Talk to her! Make her realize that sex is not taboo but is also not something that is to be done at a young age. The best weapon you have is education and a good honest relationship with your daughter.

I started getting my period at 11. I have 21 and have no kids. Just because she CAN have kids does not mean she WILL.

i think god even don't know what he has created then, how cud i knooooow

Ok, now why is this question so important? Read a book!

Someone said that back in the day, because we had short life expectancies that we needed to reproduce at an early age. However, girls are now beginning to menstruate at age 10! Yeck!

I would say that it is the hormones in the foods that WE eat. It's not "mother nature" it's humans messing around with chemistry. Great question by the way. It's not weird at all; at least you aren't asking some funky sex question.

Well back in the day, girls became women who could be married when this period first occurred. It was in the last century that it started being taboo, and the legal age was established at 18. Nature says they are ready, society, morals etc says they are not. More women are maturing younger (e.g. ages 9-13) but most would at 11-13 which is still considered typical.

Ummmm.okay. *SNICKER* How many fricken' eggs do you think all women will use in a lifetime?

Because the only thing evolution wants, is for a generation of a species to reproduce and then get out of the way. Evolution is not concerned with social conventions.

Edit: vodwine- None of the flamers have any kind of points or best-answers to answers ratio. It was a legit question. Ignore 'em. They're the idiots.

Women have enough for several dozen lifetimes so there is no risk of running out. Age shrivels them up before they would ever come close to running out.

social norms have nothing to do with the human body. Only in recent human history have life spans increased and people had been able to have children later in life. Without modern medical care most people would only live to 30 or so and would need to start a family much younger.

wow that was a very quer questions and your a ***

edit: I love how people answer questions like this without doing even a google search, look what a wikipedia search for "Menarche" (the first period) brought up

Some of the least understood environmental influences on timing of puberty are social and psychological. Nearly all of the research on these effects has concerned girls, partly because female puberty requires greater physiologic resources and partly because it involves a unique event (menarche) that makes survey research into female puberty much simpler than male. In most of these studies menarche was specifically examined, assuming it to be a valid "proxy" for the more general process of puberty. In comparison with the effects of genetics, nutrition, and general health, social influences are small, shifting timing by a few months rather than years. The most important part of a child's psychosocial environment is the family.

Some of the aspects of family structure and function reported to be independently associated with earlier female menarche:

* Absence of father from the home from early childhood
* Presence of stepfather or other genetically unrelated males in the home from early childhood
* Prolonged childhood sexual abuse
* High conflict family relationships
* Being adopted from an underdeveloped country into an affluent home

Some of the aspects of family structure and function reported to be independently associated with later puberty:

* Larger family size
* Warmer, closer or more positive relationship with biological father
* Warmer, more supportive, low stress family environment

I started to have a menses at a very young age.and I am still having it over 30 years later.I have two beautiful babies 1 and 2 years old.So whatever plan there is for our cycles worked for me..AND billions of other women.I wouldn't worry about the loss of eggs. After all there is a HUGE over population problem on this planet!

Life expectansy for women that lived in the flinstones age was very low. So, mother nature wanted to be sure that they would have children before dying. So, 13 - 14 years was a very good time to start having children and having enough time to take care of them.

Whos says the girls are not ready. The body is ready but the mind may not be. It depends were and how you grew up to. Some socitiys girls grow up fast and are ready to marry younger. And if you look at it how many young unwed mothers do you see some as young as 9 even. The are even having sex before they start their period.

Well, I don't care what the other people are telling you. In my opinion, every guy needs to know about how a women's body works just as women need to have some knowledge about men's. I think about that too and I agree about the whole starting so early but I guess in a way, its better bacause not all women want 20 children.

and also due to early sexual activities, girls CAN get pregnant at such a young age. It also might be culturaly linked, maybe? Speaking from personal experience, being Hispanic, we all(females in my family) have gotten our cycle at a young age(between 9 and 11), yet I recall when I was in middle school some of the girls I attended school with(which happened to be white) were 13 and just getting their cycles.so maybe culture, genes, etc does have something to do with it.

Mainly this is due to the growth hormones that are in much of the meat and dairy that young girls are ingesting nowadays. In the recent years, (approximately the last 15-20), many farmers add growth hormones to the feed that their animals eat, in an effort to produce fatter, bigger cattle, pigs and hens. Then that growth hormone is ingested by young people, and the result is stronger, taller & faster maturing adolescents. This means that girls are having their menstrual cycles earlier & can get pregnant earlier. Scary thought, isn't it?

A girl start period at the age of 11-14 and period continues till the age of 45-50.
She produce egg every month and i think 35 years mensturating is more than enough. It comes around approx 500 periods in life.
Don't you think it is more than sufficient

HOW MANY KIDS YOU WANT ??

Our current society is set up to where teens under 18 aren't adults. They stay in school and kids are encouraged to have children and start families later in life after school. This wasn't always the case. They are physically ready for making babies, and in the past with short life expectancies this was OK. They could pop out babies in their early teens and start their own family and this was normal. But today, with longer life expectancies, better lives in terms of education etc, we've made it unnaceptable for teens to do this.

Before, teens were physically ready and that was all that was needed. Now, teens may be physically ready but cannot cope with the social consequences.

And might I add, my God what a photo.

its something we need to get use to, adapt and mature with. having it doesn't make you a women.
its like when boys one day wake up with a mess in their pants.
mother nature is preparing you, as a parent we must help them understand its a gift not to be abused.

Here's a simple answer for you..

1. Often when a young women starts menarche (periods) her flow will be irregular and all of her hormone systems would be off balance. It takes years for a woman's body to balance itself after menarche begins. Although a woman/girl can get pregnant at, say, 10 it isn't good for her. If she begins her period at that age pregnancy should occur until at least 6 years later to ensure that the mother's body is well balanced. (If you don't take in to account personal habits, food, environment, etc. I'm speaking from a hormonal and developmental viewpoint only.) If a young woman didn't start her period until 16 she would have to optimally wait until 22 before getting pregnant. It's mother nature's way of ensuring a young woman is prepared for child birth. (In my state the average age for first child birth is 19 whereas in other places it's older or even younger. Think about that) It also has to do with maturity and mental capacity. Some culture's youths are more mature and are forced to grow up at a faster rate and would be more suited than, shall we say, the majority of America's youth.

2. We will never concieve as many children as we have eggs. That's why our body produces thousands, to waste a few and still have plenty left.

3. Should men who m@sterbate save their sperm? Isn't that a waste also?

Anything else that could have possibly been pointed out to you already has by other answerers. These are just personal viewpoints that might help explain and to elaborate other trains of thought already in progress here.

I fully agree with the thought of speaking with your daughter about sex and the consequences there of. She's much less likely to get herself in trouble if she has a posive rollmodel to speak with and to discuss these things. Remember YOU are the one she looks up too. You can help to prevent early pregnancy, drug addiction and foster healthy living and propper attitudes about life.

Thanks

Its just a way of life.i started at 11, but why on earth would your daughter at a young age get pregnant..? i never had wanted to at that age for goodness sake!

hey, none of us know! it's basically just nature's way. i do agree with you though, we r too young 4 babies and for that huge change in our bodies

i agree it sucks..i think we should start at about 27years old cause that's about when you are more responsible good question

Well, think about it! Earlier people's life span was shoter and they wanted children at a young age, so that they can somehow see them grow up! Y did u ask tho?
