Can a woman get chemically induced Lupus? I know men can!?!

Question:

Answers:
No one really knows exactly what causes lupus. Lupus sometimes seems to run in families, which suggests the disease may be hereditary. Having the genes isn’t the whole story, though. The environment, sunlight, stress, and certain medicines may trigger symptoms in some people. Other people who have similar genetic backgrounds may not get signs or symptoms of the disease. Researchers are trying to find out why.

Other Answers:
there's been an urban legend making that rounds claiming that the aspartame contained in artificial sweeteners (like nutrasweet) can cause lupus-like symptoms such as muscle distrophy and paralysis. the emails have a personal touch sometimes like, "a friend of mine who was diagnosed with lupus two years ago stopped drinking Diet Coke and a month later all of her lupus symptoms disappeared!"

the fda claims this is a hoax and the chemical is safe. i wouldn't be surprised by much of anything, however.
