What is Para Neon Plastic Syndrome, how treated and how cured?!

Question:
Friend may have Para Neon Plastic Syndrome and we are trying to find out about this illness to give him some information as to what it is and how it is treated and how can he get better?
Answers:
It's para-neoplastic syndrome -- means "para" = beside, and Neoplasm = tumor.

Basically it means the side effect(s) of a tumor. The growth of a tumor can have direct effects such as compressing blood vessels, but the paraneoplastic effects would be stuff like the tumor consumes so much energy that the person "starves" despite eating. Another paraneoplastic effect is the nausea that some patients experience. If you Google it (spelled correctly) I'm sure you can find a lot more.

I wish I could help you but you can go to webmd.com or cdc.com and should be able to find out about it

You are referring to Paraneoplastic syndromes (plural). These are a group of rare degenerative disorders that are triggered by the immune systems's response to a neoplasm (any new growth -- that's what neo plasm means..new growth) or to a malignant tumor. Typically affects middle-aged to older people and are most common in the presence of lung, ovarian, lymphatic and breast cancers. The cancer is treated first with efforts to decrease the autoimmune response either by use of steroids or IV immunoglobulin or radiation. Plasmaphoresis, a means of cleaning antibodies from the blood, can help symptoms involving the peripheral nervous system. Speech & physical therapy may help some regain function. There is no cure for paraneoplastic syndromes and the progressive neurological damage. Ususally the presence of cancer determines the prognosis. Research is ongoing. I'm truly sorry I can't give you better news.

the only thing we ever talk about with paraneoplastic syndrome is the effects of the tumor on the whole body.

every cell in your body has every gene you need to survive. the cells in your feet have the genes that it takes to produce saliva or insulin or stomach acid. but since the cell is in your foot, it's been assigned the task of foot-type things (let's say it's a bone cell). now, if your friend had some sort of bone cancer in this bone, and the cell has changed into a cancerous cell, all of the control mechanisms that used to be in place are turned off. now this former foot bone cell is making hormones that should be coming from other glands in your body. ususally these hormone levels are tightly controled, but since this is a cancer cell there is no control.

different tumors will put out different hormones. paraneoplastic syndrome is different for everyone. the main way to treat it is to get rid of the tumore. the other things that can be done are countering the effects of the hormone that's being put out. for almost every hormone in our bodies, there is a medication that will do the oposite or block the action of that hormone. so if your friend is kicking out insulin, the docotr should give an insulin antagonist (something that will block the insulin from trying to do its normal job.)

well, i hope that helps a bit, maybe it's too wordy.
