best stay home.

you have a bacterial infection and need an antibiotic.
white milkey discharge is a sinus infection and clear would just be from alergie or crying but no infection of any type.

If you are talking about it when you have a cold or flu, green snot is a good sign. It indicates your immune system is winning over the wrath of the virus, especially in your lungs and lower sinus. You will note that when you start blowing green snot, it doesn't take very long before you are well. At the beginning you will note you get clear watery nasal discharge.
NEVER, NEVER take antibiotics when you have a cold or flu especially if you are relatively young and healthy. Only take antibiotics if you are prone or have pre-existing condition of getting pnemonia or bronchitis which are bacterial based and can become a complication from cold/flu.
There are no cures for cold/flu. All of the medication available for cold/flu only help you reduce the unpleasant symptoms. Bed rest and mom's chicken soup works the best.
Let all of us be more cautious about taking antibiotics. For some diseases, the most powerful antibiotic known to man is becoming ineffective because of casual and over prescribing of antibiotics.
