Vioxx is rofecoxib, a selective cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2)inhibitor. It inhibits the pathway for the generation of prostaglandins which play an important role in inflammation as well as pain. Its different from the older generation of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like diclofenac and naprosyn as it causes less constitution effects like gastric erosions and ulceration.

Vioxx is indeed an NSAID (non-steroid anti-inflammatoir drug), of a COX-2 type, you have COX-1 NSAID (eg. brufen, mobic, mesulid, .) en COX-2 NSAID (vioxx, celebrex,.)

The problem with cox-1 is that you can develop gastric ulcers, if you use it to much,
with cox-2 you should have less that problem, but recent studies have shown that vioxx give problems to people who have heart-problems, already some people have died of hartproblems after taking vioxx, in Europe its already of the market because of this reason,

people who have reumatic conditons take this drug to release their pain
