Recently developed swollen, painful, stiff left knee, no history of trauma to joi!

Question:
Also have associated PAINLESS left ankle swelling. Symptoms mild in the AM but increase as the day progresses. Stiffness is so severe that I need to use accomodations to rise from a sitting to standing posture. Kneeling is impossible anytime of day. These symptoms just started 4 weeks ago. At that time I recently purchased a new foam matress topper. Could the two be related?

Possible causes:

Arthritis (due to old age or rheumatism), infection (sometimes caused by common bacteria like staph, can also be caused by STD's like gonorrhea), also injury / trauma. Arthritis can also be a sign of other more serious diseases like lupus, Crohn's disease, etc.

While is is most likely not something serious, red hot swollen and painful joints need to be seen by a doctor very soon. Especially if you have a fever. Please call your doctor so you don't risk the possibility of joint damage.

Could be arthritis, go to an orthopedic doc they'll take an x-ray and maybe an MRI to see what is going on in there. I just had an arthroscopy on my knee recently.

your knee sounds like torn cartilage. Aleve or strong Ibuprofen would help, also it's about all you can do. Your ankle sounds like the symptoms of retaining water. Drinking more water can help.

have you ever concidered going to the doctor and asking him? you might have tenidnitus, but a much more complex than what i have. i have pains mostly after track, but my knee pops.
Try icing it 15 min. on 15 off, and don't keep puttingit on and off, on and off, constantly, it won't help.

You really nee to see a doctor. The illnesses that include joint pain are many. The first thing I thought of was arthritis (did your folks have it?) or lyme's disease. Do not walk, run to the doctor (pun intended) and get diagnosed. This could be something extremely serious and I am very concerned that you may have waited to long.

The other way to look at this is, if you go to the doctor and find out it isn't major, then at least it's something that can be treated and overcome quickly.

Are you a runner? Do you play any type of running sport? Do you jog daily? Anything that causes the femur (upper leg bone) to push on the knee cartilage can damage the cartilage. When you run you put 500 pounds of weight on your knees. Talk to your doctor, you may need surgery.
