how do i survive the coughing spells after i quit smoking? is there any remedy f!

Question:
i've twice tried to quit smoking, and after being a social smoker (about 3 a day) for 25 years, its not that difficult to quit, however the incessant coughing spells that result after quiting after about a week is driving me insane. how long does it last and is there something i can take to ease the coughing?
Answers:
In very rare cases, you may get infected with bronchitis or pneumonia when you quit smoking. Or it may just be lungs clearing itself out. Try cough syrups or decongestants. Consult your doctor if the cough persists for more than a week. I wish you best of luck in quitting this terrible thing. I did last year and never looked back. I feel healthier and happier than ever.

maybe try mucinex

A cigarette or two usually cures it.

good for you, tough it out they will stop or use a suppressant.

If it is productive, try deep breathing exercises. Breath in deeply about three times and on the third one, upon exhaling, try to cough up anything that you feel is there. Try it especially as soon as you wake up in the morning. If it isn't productive, lay off of cold drinks and irritants. It will give your pharynx (throat) a chance to heal. This all takes time. It took time to damage yourself so, it will take time to heal as well.

I'm a nurse.

keep a sweet in your mouth that keeps wettening your throught and makes it less painful to cough.
it will stopp at a certain stage - kkep going!
good luck!

Honey and lemon, licorice root tea, or Marshmallow tea (it's an herb) best thing u can do is drink a lot of water to flush ur system and help keep ur tissues hydrated and lubricated. Good luck and Congrats on quitting.

There is a tea called 'Lung Tea' that can be found at health food stores. It won't make the cough go away, in fact it makes you cough your head off. However, the tea helps clear out the nasty mucus and irritants that are buried in your lungs in a matter of days. It's better than suffering for months.

You have emphysema. ALL smokers who do not die of cancer first will get emphysema. Its just a matter of degree. If you continue smoking, it will get worse. The disease starts with a persistant cough. In a few years, you'll be dragging an oxygen bottle around with you.

Unlike cancer, the risk of emphysema does not go away after you quit. It simply doesn't get any worse.

Sorry about that dude, but you shouldn't have started in the first place.

PS - see your doctor.
