What does "guarded condition" really mean?!

Question:
My father is recovering in a nursing facility from a scary hospital stay. He seems to be doing pretty well but is still recovering his strength and his respiratory system is still impaired from pneumonia. My sister was told he is in guarded condition which sounds bleaker than we would think he would be listed. I Googled the term (sorry, Yahoo) but found nothing helpful. Can someone define "guarded" or link me to definitions of the whole range of medical condition terms?
Answers:
i will just give you a brief rundown of what prognosis definitions are.-grim=almost no chance of recovery..Critical= means that the next few days or weeks are extremely crucial in making sure that all the right procedures are done at the right times and that the patient is continually monitored and treated.Guarded actually isn't bleak it basically means that the doctors don't know what is going to happen because there are probably thousands of cases just like your dad's that have came out of it just fine and then there were other cases where the patient did not make it. Guarded means less about how they think he is going to do and more their opinion on what is going to happen is guarded. next is fair which basically means the patient should recover fine as long as they follow what the doctor tells them to but there is a small chance of difficulty. finally good condition means that there is no reason as to why the patient shouldn't fully recover.

Other Answers:
his condition is serious, so he is being frequently monitored by the medical staff.

It means that he's continually monitored, but not serious enough to be placed in critical care.
