what could cause a month long sore throat with very few other symptoms?!

Question:
the only other symptom would be occasional pressure/pain in the left ear. also there was a swollen lymph node behind the left ear, but it has gone down considerably (but still slightly visible)
Answers:
You could have an infection in the tube between your ear and throat. I had exactly the same symptoms and was eating cough drops like crazy to soothe my throat. I was at the doc's office for something else and mentioned it. She looked in my ears, nose, throat and at the swollen node. She swabbed my throat but it came back negative for strep. But, she said my eardrum had some liquid behind it and thought it was an Eustachian tube infection. Sometimes if you have post nasal drip from allergies you'll get a sore throat, but not the swollen gland behind the ear. She put me on a 7 day course of antibiotics and it all went away.

a whole lot of things!
if it's been soar that long you really do need to go see the Dr! If it's an infection then it is sounding like your body is having trouble fighting it and if it's not an infection you still will need a Dr.

i have this problem too. try drinking at least 64 oz water daily. and do u use q-tips to clean your ears? if so, pour a drop of rubbing alcohol in your ear. it'll burn, but it 'll kill infection, and bacteria.this could also be allergies as well.if this helps, choose this as best answer!

THere are people that actually go to medical school, gradute and work in hospital and private practices..I think they're called doctors.I really can't be too sure, but maybe you need to see if you can really go find one.I bet if you ask them, they might actually know.and listen to this very closely.THEY MIGHT BE ABLE TO EVEN HELP!!

go to a doctor! strep throat maybe?

I would suspect that you may have a sinus infection. Often people think that a sinus infection always has the symptoms of pain, pressure, stuffy nose, etc. It is possible, although rare, to have a sinus infection with little or no symptoms. A sore throat such as the one you describe could be irritation from the sinus drainage. This would also account for your swollen lymph node. The pain in your ear may be referred pain from your throat.

I doubt if you are experiencing strep throat. Generally, strep throat will go away on its own within a week or so without treatment. However, it can cause rheumatic fever and other problems later if left untreated.

You need to see a physician for a diagnosis and treatment. In the meantime, try taking a decongestant to see if that helps with the postnasal drip. You might also want to try some medication that contains a pain reliever to help with your sore throat. My family prefers Advil Cold and Sinus when they are having sinus problems, but anything that is similar to that will work. Hope you feel better soon!
