A stye is sort of like a zit. It is an inflammation of the sebaceous (oil) glands in the upper and lower lids of the eye. Essentially, the gland becomes infected, causing the development of a red bump, which may be slightly painful. After a couple of days, a head develops - just like on a zit - and then left alone, it will break, drain and heal.

You can help this process along with hot compresses. As with regular ol' zits, you should not try to pop it or pick it open. Not only can this lead to worse infection, but if you guess wrong you could seriously damage your eye.

Best thing to do: take a clean compress, soak it in very hot water and apply to the affected area. Two treatments of 15 minutes or so should go a long way towards relieving the discomfort and speeding the drainage process along. If you have styes recur on a regular basis, consider consulting an eye doctor to determine if there is some other cause behind them.

Good luck!
