Why does it take so long to diagnose Tourette Syndrome & have tics for so long b!

My 11 year old son has this disorder. It is difficult to diagnose because it's hard to determine what is going on. Tourettes usually (not always) makes itself known slowly. Also, when he was younger, it was hard to ask a 4,5 and 6 year old if he is in control of his movements. They don't understand what's happening, and its a difficult concept for a child to understand.
It became obvious at about 9 that he could not control his movements and he was old enough to know the difference. After many baffling doctor visits, we finally took him to a Pediatric Neurologist and got the diagnosos. It was a relief, sort of, to finally know what was going on.
If you have a question about someone you know, I would advise a trip to a Neurologist. Well meaning parents, school nurses, teachers, psychologists and others are not qualified to make this diagnosis.

Actually Tourettes is easy to diagnose. You must see a neurologist. It can be done in one visit with a series of tests.
Because the disorder usaully develops in childhood. it is not one that comes Pop! and you are 22 years old! It has to be going on I would ay about lifelong but real sttrongly for about 8 months. If not it may be ADD or ADHD. Thanks for the points and good luck with whatever you are working on!
