chemical hair dye will make your hair even more crappy, dry, and poofy, trust me.
use Henna, it comes in all the basic colors and your hair will be unbelievably soft and shiny.
my mom has dyed her hair with red hair dye and most recently blond (for 6 years) and its done quite a number on her hair, but this past year i got her to use henna and its worked wonders, it looks natural, shiny, and has a rich color.

Your best best it to go to a beauty supply store. Store bought crap with dry out your hair. Plus they have metallic in them. Wella is probably your best bet. Very inexpensive, and conditioning. You can get it at Sallys Beauty Supply.
