Painless shots from dentist?!

Question:
Is there any technique that dentists can use when they give you a shot, that doesn't hurt? That is the only reason I don't go very often. I know they put the swab with the numbing stuff on there before the shot but that doesn't help. It's when the needle gets deep that it really hurts!
Answers:
Ask the dentist to give you a second shot if you need it. If he/she won't give it to you find a new dentist. Good luck.

Other Answers:
Well, i cannot tell you about a technique they use, but i can give u some to you, well usually dentist shots doesn't hurt, can be. you know, not too much commodity ( i don't speak well English)but what u can do if u r nervous, is to just take it easy, and relax, probably you are a nervous person, and u have to take your time and talk with persons of your confiance (Your family or friends). Or there are some people who have phobia (scare of) the dentist, seriously is true, if this is the case, that i don't think so, you should go with a psychologist.

good luck!

The slower the dentist administers the anesthetic the less it hurts. Ask your dentist to go slowly when giving you an injection.

If that what's keeping you away from the dentist--I would recommend talk to your dentist about sedation. They can offer you some medication that will relax you & there are some that even give you amnesia about the whole procedure.

I'm a dental assistant

I know the answer to this! My dentist is WONDERFUL and this is what he does. First he gets the swab with oragel or whatever it is, and lets it sit there for a while. The novacaine is at room temperature. This helps with the pain. When he's ready to give the shot, he grasps my cheek between his finger and thumb - thumb on inside of mouth, finger on cheek. He shakes my cheek really fast while he gives the shot.
He told me that the brain can only think of one stimulus at a time. The shaking of the cheek is a stronger stimulus than the shot itself. Your brain is busy thinking about the cheek shaking, and you can't feel the shot much at all.
Trust me on this one.

I agree with Sylvia. My dentist numbs my gum. Lets it sit then shakes my cheek while giving the shot. It really helps.

Sylvia has a good answers, but there is more to the shaking than just tricky the mind. It also helps move the liquid through the tissue. Much of the pain from the injection is from the tension on the tissue from the large amount of fluid in such a small area. The dentist can also inject the solution very slowly.allowing time for the liquid to move.

my dentist has this machine that injects the shot very very slowly through this tiny needle, it takes a bit longer but it doesn't not hurt.

my theory is that any dentist who advertises WE CATER TO COWARDS is a secret sadist looking for people to mess with.

Also, you get what you pay for, my dentist is expensive, but I'd rather be bored during any procedure than pay less and be squirming.

it actually depends on the dentist diagnosis.
if you have an infection, you may need antibiotics, for a few days. then maybe have general sedation(nitrous oxide).
but see your dentist first and ask questions?
