What external factors can effect an EEG result?!

Question:
Im due to have an EEG on tues to check for Epilepsy, is there anything I should avoid to make sure the result is accurate?
Answers:
it is importain to be sleep deprived for the test. everything else should be done as you normally would do. the things they do during the test could possibly cause you to have a seizure.for example you'll have to do a breathing excersise which is basically hyperventilation and you'll do that for approximately 3-5 mins. theyll ask you to take a nap and seizures and interictal activity may show up then as well also they will put a strobe light in front of your eyes and blink it at different frequencies.

this test is noninvasive and the only thing that may affect your test would be some drugs like barbituates and other street drugs.caffeine will increase your beta waves but nothing significant and prescriptions like prozac will make fast eye movements show up on the test but all of that can be differentiated from epileptic activity

the epileptic activity they would be looking for may or may not show up. that would depend on what area of the brain the originate from. if you have experienced seizures in the past it is very importain to describe in detail how it began.like an aura (strange smells, seeing lights, strange feelings like intense deja vu or being unable to talk; even embarrasing auras like sexual feelings right before a seizure) this information will help with determining the area of the brain that the seizure comes from.

the only bad part of the test is that there will be a little bit of paste left in your hair the good thing is though it washes right out

i hope this helps

caffeine that effects everything, if the Dr office did not say to avoid anything else then don't worry about it but just stay away form caffeine for about 24 hours prior
