Anyone have experience with personality change after stroke?!

Question:
My dad had a headinjury and is fine physically, but his personallity change - always angry, nit-picking etc. Doc's say it is like after a stroke - the brain needs time to recover, he has no permanent damage. Just hard on all of us.

IngridKL,

Having a family member go through a head injury is tough. Our mother had a stroke and it is indeed as though she has died. She just isn't the same person she used to be.

You have to remember that this isn't your father's fault. He isn't in control of himself and if he could see what he is doing, he'd feel terrible.

Fortunately, this isn't permanent, like many head injuries. Hang in there and take comfort with the rest of the family.

never had a stroke but i know this is common and ive seen it happen a couple of times myself

My gramma had the same thing after she had her stroke. Her body was alive but the woman I knew as Gramma had died.

yeah, i'm sure it's really tough. but it must also be rough for him as well, especially knowing how hard it is for you and the rest of your family, in addition to all of the direct consequences he's had from the stroke. give him some time and he should get better, the brain's pretty resilient.

Aging seems to do that to a lot of people. In my personal experience it seems to be more common with men. Medications and Physical changes/impairments are most often the culprit. It may or may not get better. It is really hard when someone you love used to be so happy go lucky and then they turn into A GROUCH! I guess getting old and not being able to live as they once did has to be hard too.

Well I have no definate awnser but my grandfather used to be a friggin' grump, and sometimes very rude and obnoxious, but after he had a stroke he seemed almost like a new person!

He was funny and very goofy at times, and overall he seemed to be a nicer person.

I think that people change when things like Heart Attacks or Strokes happen because they realize, they may have just had a brush with death and lifes too short to not have fun and be a tad bit nicer to people. This is my take on it atleast!

Different areas of your brain control different functions and emotions. A stroke in the frontal area can affect personality. taste and other sensations. The brain is pretty resilient and often times, it overcomes a stroke and retrains another pathway for the impulse to go thru to create the action or process the emotion.

Yes, my mother was very irritable and hard to be around after she had a stroke. 5 years later, now and she is back to very sweet again.
