I just saw a TV special about strokes. When you begin to get the symptoms, immediately take an aspirin. Then go to the hospital and get what they call a "TPA" within 3 hours from the onset of the stroke. The TV special stated that this action will mimimize the effects of a stroke or ensure that you do not get any negative effects.

The only thing that can cure a stroke is time. If a stroke is found early enough, and the patient is gotten to a hospital, there are things that can be done to help them. This is crucial, it has to be done within the first 3 hours of symptoms. After that, the options are limited. When a stroke happens, part of the brain is without oxygen and it dies. Sometimes the patient can be rehabilitated (taught to do things all over again) and sometimes the stroke was so bad that they can't be treated. It can take a long time to recover from a stroke.

Once you have experienced stroke, and are in the recovery stage, you need to do mental excercise. There are many different types but essentially what you need to do is "retrain" your brain by accessing new neurological pathways, such as doing things with an opposite hand and using sensory receptors like touch and taste in different ways than in the past. This encourages the brain to seek out new electical pathways and stimulates its growth. Another is to find focus exercises that will help your regenerate the "stroked" pathways so that the brain will repair what it can. The brain is like a server and will find a different source if prompted.
