glucophage is typically used in patients that have insulin resistance. Insulin Resistance is when your pancrease makes too make insulin because it feels that your body needs it. Typically its making the insulin wrong, and it doesn't normally work as well, as a patient with out Insuline resistance. Glocophage helps to slow down the insulin making and also help the body break down carbohydrates and sugars so your pancreas doesn't have to work so hard to keep up. I am not sure how it helps or works to help a person lose weight. They had me on it for a while though and I didn't like it. I could only be on it for a few days and it would drive me nuts. It gave me cold sweats, and made me feel dizzy and just NOT myself at all. Many people think an alternate to glucophage is to just watch the carbs and sugars that you eat. Don't eat many breads and such. They recommend the atkins diet.
