Creating your own reality?!

Question:
I spent the early years of my son's life teaching him the philosophy that we create our own reality. He is 15 now and has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. He believes that the rituals he performs keeps bad things from happening. I have him in therapy and on medication but I don't know how to reconcile for him or myself the issue of whether he can control reality by his thoughts because I still believe that you create your own reality because I have seen too much evidence in life to support it. If there is anyone who is familiar with this philosophy, I really could use some help in understanding our situation.
Answers:
Reality is truly self created, perception is all. THis is a very commonly accepted principle and one argued against by those who are certain that God created the only true reality. In any case read http://www.redshift.com/~beyond/real1010.html lays it all out nicely with resources for further study. Your son's OCD is in no way a result of your belief in self-created reality, as another poster inferred. Take care.

can you drag a question on more without aswking a question? Oy VAY!

Looks like your teaching made a believer of your son. He now keeps bad things from happening and is continually applying the rule to create.

Please don't be angry if I say that it seems your son's bevaviour is a reaction to your 'firm' belief on 'you create your own reality'.

You must have arguments to support your inference, however he is an individual capable of analysing things the way he likes. Please be supportive and give yourself some break also by thinking that how he thinks may have some reality too. Otherwise he'll loose his personality and confidence in life.

Also, one should not easily label someone with these psychological jargons as most of them are crap. Because despite all the efforts and progress in this regard, we still know very little about life and specially human life.

at least nothing bad happens

Good question.

All we can control is our actions and a portion of what is right in front of us, over time our decisions do create our reality, and there is a huge philo/spiritual dialogue to be had. It sounds like your son's condition is the manifestation of a past trauma, as it's about fear. Don't blame your self, just try to do the right thing in each moment, that's all you can do. I realize it's a heavy situation, you should to, so patience and understanding will be your strength.

You've basically advocated solipsism to your son. No wonder the poor boy's got issues. This is very basic, primitive philosophy- I'd suggest broadening his horizons and introducing him to other world-views before he drives himself crazy.

who was u to teach him..see now..anyway there is still a way..Turn Ur heart to Jesus.:)It helps..:)
