My 11 yo son has a boil on his elbow best way to treat it please?!

Question:
I already covered it with a large bandaid coated with Betadine gel.
Answers:
You should have it looked at by a doctor. It may turn out to not be a boil, it could be an abscess which usually needs drained. Also be careful of infections looking like boils, they can become very deadly. A doctor is always the best bet for a situation such as this. Now if you are certain its a boil, their are a few ways to treat them. Hot moist compresses can help. If they become to severe they can be popped and drained, which usually isn't recommended, but I do it anyway, which usually helps, as long as the head comes out. Ichthammol drawing salve may also help draw the head out, you can find it in many stores, it smells and looks like tar, but works wonders.

take him to the doctor!

amen on that one if u mess it up it can get very infected.

The best thing to do is take him to the doctor, however do NOT treat it with alcohol because that actually kills the skin. Do nothing to irritate it.

i have had more than one.time is the best treatment

take him to the dr.my son had 2 they turned out to be strep or something like it it could have killed him they drained and cut its shell out of him they said it was transpeatble too i bleached everything

when i was a wee lad me parents would take me to the hospital. the doc would put some freeze type spray on the boil then lance it open. it didn't hurt much cause of the cold. as i got older i would pop them before they got too bad.

You need to apply a hot wash cloth. When it's cold get a new one and continue until it gets better.

If you take him to the doctor, theres nothing they can do for it except give him some antibiotics to clear it up faster. You'd be wasting your money. However, if you're not sure that its a boil, take him in. Alot of spider bites look like boils.

Warm water may help soothe it and soften the skin so that it naturally drains and goes away.

My brother had one and it ended up so infected they had to remove it to get the puss out and pack it with medication and gauze. He needs to go to the doctor and get on some antibiotics, I would ask and make sure it is okay to leave it alone or should pop it. Take him to the doctor probably would be best.

i used to get those all the time when i was his age, just squeeze them, it feels real good lol
a weird yellow string-like thing (very hard and solid) will come out, sorta like popping zits

My sister gets these all the time. First it is VERY important that you know it can spread and when you clean it or change the bandage you need to wash very well after. I would recommend getting latex gloves for when your tending to the boil.

Moist heat is helpful but do not put him in the bath, it can spread to other parts of his body. Drain it when needed with sterilized appicators and the Betadine gel is good. Use plenty. Keep it completely covered at all times!

If it increases in size I would get him to a doctor. But there is really not much they can do.

My Grandmother used to put a raw onion slice on it overnight, she swore by it to draw out the puss.

Give him Tylenol too. They can really hurt. :(

Betadine won't help. And it could hinder the time it takes to heal.

Put a wet, hot cloth over it several times a day -- this will help draw it out. Eventually it will come to a head (sometimes it's painful at this stage - that is normal). And then pop. This is good!!

It's really important to let it resolve naturally or it WILL come back. Avoid antibiotics -- they will only suppress what the body is naturally trying to resolve. If suppressed - it will come back.

Someone mentioned it 'spreading'.Uhm, it will only 'spread' if it's something like impetigo. Boils aren't usually impetigo! Even so, it's a good idea to make sure his sheets are clean (to avoid secondary infection once it's opened up - i.e. popped) -- and that you change his bath towels after every bath.

**After** it pops - put Calendula ointment/cream on it - and make sure to leave it uncovered so the air gets to it. Calendula will help it heal VERY fast - but only after it's suppurated (popped). Witch Hazel is also very soothing -- if there is any pain at this point - but the Calendula is the best ointment to use once it's popped.

Hope this helps;).

if it hurts right now put a soggy tea bag on it it will help the pain and itchyness go away till you can take him to the dr. i have had a few and time helps to heal as well as a poltus patch.
