melanin. the amount of melanin in your body determines the natural color of your skin.
There's this stuff in your body called pigment, it gives your skin color, different people have different amounts. Then there's the sun also that plays a part in darkening the skin. Then there aren't just blacks and whites, there are all kinds of races, cultures, and skin colors.
It's because of where their ancestors were before about 2-3 thousand years ago. Where they were livinbg after that doesn't make a difference one way or another. For example, if your ancestors were livbing on or near the equator about this time ago, then your skin would be darker. You may ask why the inuit people have darker skin even though they live in Alaska. This is because they moved there after 2-3 thousand years ago.

because people have different backgrounds. For exampple i am 1/4 english 1/4 irish and 1/2 italian
italians normally have a little darker skin and irish and english normally have lighter skin. the skin color comes from what your background is and where that place for example italian is italy is they are closer to the equator than ireland. but then there are black people and white people and people that are black could be from africa, jamaca, etc. and whites are normally from somewhere in either england, ireland, some are from asia and russia, greenland, austrailia, etc.
