if you get your gallbladder taken out can you lose weight quick?!

Question:
there is a woman at work and she is going to have to get her gallbladder taken out because of stones and she is telling everyone at work that when she gets it out she will lose between 80 to 100 pounds is that right?
Answers:
Weight loss does occur in some people after any surgery, but this is incidental (except after gastric bypass and the like). Removal of the gall bladder in and of itself has no such intended effect. One of the common sympotms of a diseased or obstructed gall bladder is a flare up of discomfort after eating fatty foods. One may argue, that the removal of the GB may actualy allow a person to eat MORE fat!

Other Answers:
even if it does work, why would you do that?

Sounds pretty goofy to me.

Gallbladder's are only taken out for the health & safety of the person.
Sometimes the stones are large, like tumors & can make your stomach really big. Once they are removed, the tumor is gone, so you will actually lose the excess weight that the tumor caused. As a result, she could appear thinner, but not by that much.

Let us know if it works for her!

I had my gall bladder removed in 1976. I did not lose a significant amount of weight because of the surgery. I really didn't have much of an appetite after the surgery, but as I found out later it was an effect of the anesthesia. My appetite returned after about 4 months. The surgery done 30 years ago was different than it is now, I had a 5 hour surgery and was in the hospital for 2 weeks. Now it is done on an outpatient basis. I think I did not lose that much weight because of the pain and inactivity of such an invasive surgery. It took me the full 6 weeks to recover and I was only 24 years old. I hope this is helpful to you.

Personal Experience.

I doubt it. She may be thinking that she will absorb less fat. But the truth is, she will not loose much absorbency at all. Bile, which is stored in the gall bladder, still gets to be produced in the liver and it leaks into intestines to digest the fat. Plus, why worry.you will see for yourself if she is right.

no,you may lose a bit at first due to being sore or the stress of surgery but not long term weight lose.
