why does my blood sugar drop back to fasting levels within 30 mins of eating?!

Question:
my blood glucose will go from fasting level, 80 mg/dl to 160 mg/dl back to 80 or less within 30 minutes. ive heard a normal person will take up to 6 hours to get their blood glucose back to fasting levels after eating. what could cause this? ive tried low carb diets, which help somewhat, but im so tired all the time. i cannot gain weight even on a well ballanced 4000+ calorie a day diet. eathing 3 meals and 3 snacks. and i am tired all the time. these spells of low blood sugar used to come once every few months, but now its an every day event. ive been to several different doctors who have told me a: eat sugar, b: i need paxil and c: we cant find anything wrong. please someone help! who can i turn to? i feel like im going to wither away into nothing if i cant find a way to gain weight and get my body to stop eating itself!!
Answers:
Actually what you are telling me makes me worry a bit. Your blood sugar should NEVER get over 140. It sounds to me like you are wearing out your pancreas. 30 minutes is not all THAT unusual a time for it to come back down, though usually it takes 90 or more. However, you should check it again in 30 minutes to see if it is dropping to 70 or below. If it is, you are beginning to be hypoglycemic. You should speak with your doctor. Most insulin dependant diabetics are hypoglycemic for a period BEFORE they develop diabetes. A simple correction in your diet could help. Talk to your physician and ask for a hemoglobin A1c to see what your long term blood sugars are (12 weeks average). This can tell you whether there is a problem. Fasting bloodsugars are basically worthless. They often do NOT tell you if are a "borderline" diabetic, and they rarely tell you if you are hypoglycemic. Also, a glucose tolerance test could help as well. talk to your doc!

I was given the standard glucose tolerance tests years ago, and my doctor told me I was borderline hypoglycemic. I was experiencing extremes in how tired I got. Passing out if I stood up to fast, and getting serious headaches as well.I also got extremely thin.
I started by eliminating all sugars, even corn, fruit sugars, white bread, alcohol etc.. but discovered that I had to eat more than 3 meals a day, and I couldn't eat a standard sized meal, or else I would be utterly useless afterward. I started eating 6 to 8 very small meals all day, high protien things like almonds, peanuts, string cheese, chicken and whole grains in limited quanities. I kept my fruit intake to things like berries and mixed them with yogurt or in smoothies with protien powders. Essentially I became consumed with what I was eating and when, but it really made a difference. My energy levels came back to normal and eventually surpassed what they were to begin with. After a few years I was able to start eating fairly normal, but did continue to snack on nuts, berries and whole grains and cheese throughout the day. I can now have a glass of wine without getting a headache or passing out.
I know when I've blown it and don't feel good if I eat to heavy of a meal. Basically my weight evened out and I feel like a normal person again. Good Luck!

Your blood sugar level should never be that high. You should have your hemoglobin checked to see if you might have a problem. Also, just in case, low carb diet is good but don't go to NO carbs. You may drop too low and that is dangerous. I am a type II diabetic and take oral meds each day. I am require to eat 60g/carbs per meal and 30g/carbs with each snack. I eat every two - three hours. Its the only way I can maintain good sugar levels without the quick ups and downs. I too struggle to maintain weight ( I am almost 6'ft.tall female weighing 150#) I am rather thin and if I don't eat right I loss quickly and have tons of trouble with sugar levels. You must be a high energy person too :) The diet regiment is a small price to pay to be healthy. I feel better now after I was diagnosed and started thinking about what I eat. My advice - have your bloodwork done ! Hope you're feeling better soon!
