I want to become a Dental Hygienist? How do I take the right steps to achive my!

Question:
I know a hygienist but this person is pretends to be nice, but I notice that tries to make me feel as if she is better in every aspect than me. This person speaks or tries to speak so clearly, as if speaking better than me. This person believes that I won't make it because this person is already a hygienist and feels i don't have what it takes.
Answers:
There are 2 types of degrees for a hygienist . you can get an associate's degree which generally takes about 2 years to obtain or you can get a bachelor's degree which generally takes about 4 years to obtain. Either way, contact a college to find out about the course outline.

Other Answers:
Talk to a careers adviser, search on the internet. There are plenty of dental surgeries out there, find a different hygienist to talk to as well. Good luck with your career!

If you want to do something in this world.go and do it!First you will have to go to college and do your BSc. if your diction isnt good then go to a speech therapist. I would go ahead and show this person than you CAN and WILL do it. Dont let others influence you. Be your own person and make your own decisions. Go and get what you want in life.

people like to think that they're special and have abililties others don't have so when we try to take the same path they often feel threatened. why not remind her all a hygienst does is scrape tartar and clean teeth its not roocket science, and lets be honest if she was better than you she'd be a dentist. i'm sure you can be trained so contact your local college and see if they have any courses.

If you want to become a Dental Hygienist you can call one of your state universities and set up an appt. with a college advisor. The degree only takes 2 years to complete .

umm.
1. go to dental college
2. grraduate
3. put up a big signboard outside the building
4. The Dental Hygienist is ready for business

Don't take what this hygienist is saying to you personally. She probably treats everybody like that and it's probably some issue she has that makes her like that. Dental hygiene school is very hard, but with determination and good study habits, you can get through it. In the US, a hygienist can either have a Bachelor's degree or an Associate's degree. For a BS, you have to have about 65 hours of pre requisites. Each school and each state is different, so you should find a school you want to go to and they can tell what is required for admission. The link below is the ADHA's website where you can click on your state and it will show you all the DH schools in your state. DH school is very difficult. Most people think you just learn how to scrape teeth, but that is not true. Just the pre-requisites are hard - mostly science classes. You will be taking biology, A&P, microbiology, chemistry. just to get accepted. Later, you must take a National Board written exam and then a state clinical exam before you can practice as a hygienist. DH school was the hardest thing I've ever done, but it was worth it. Good luck.

It is hard to get into a DH program because there are so few schools out there. First step is type in "Dental hygiene school list by state" on Yahoo search engine. The ADA website should come up and give you a list of all colleges public and private that teach DH in your state. Then you need to apply to these schools. It can be expensive and it may take you years to get into a program or you may never get in. Each school only accepts about 20-25 people for the DH program and they only accept for Fall of each year. So only once a year are people accepted into the program. About 100 or more people apply to the DH program at each school and the school only picks 20-25 as I stated. So highly competitive. The hygienist may think that you are not as committed to becoming a DH as she is that is why she is talking down to you, which she shouldnt but that is probably how she feels. I started apply to DH schools about 2 years ago and I ended up having to go out of state because that was the only school that accepted me. I already have an associates degree in another field and a BS in another field. The average student age for DH is 27 because schools prefer an applicant that has had previous college experience, especially in science related field.

If you are serious in becoming a DH student plan on spending a lot of time apply and a lot of money to apply to several schools. Also the program is not cheap. I am transfering to a community college now so it will be cheaper for me but it will still cost me about 12,000 dollars or more for the whole 2 years to get my AS in DH. Private schools can cost 30,000 per year so of you dont have much money try to go to a public college. Apply to as many colleges as you can but DO NOT apply until you complete all the prereq. courses. All of these DH schools have a list of several courses you must take before you can even apply. Go luck!
