I don't know, from the looks of some of the answers I see, either everyone works in California, or in a hospital, because those are just about the only place I know where they are not part of the everyday office dress code.
As for the wearing them out when not at work I 'don't know. Unless you are doing a casual sports thing, why not. If you buy real nylons or good pantyhose, they are super comfortable and sexy too. I am amazed at the time some girls spend loading tons of makeup on their faces, painting their toenails, and then go around with bare legs, and claiming natural is best. I got news, scrub off all the makeup and put on some nylons and you will be a lot more attractive.

Depending on the climate (like humid ones), pantyhose can get very uncomfortable. Also, that kind of apparel is better with business outfits, not everyday got to school or work at McDonalds kind of places.
Pantyhose.Where to start. Most girls I know don't like how they fit. No matter what they are too big or too tight. They inch their way down your legs(I'm talking about both kinds; knee-high and full-leg). The biggest problem for my girlfriends and I is the line issue. They leave lines around your waist or hip area, no matter how skinny you are. Not to mention they may pinch you in just the right area to cause a "fat roll affect", especially in the belly area. In a dress these lines and rolls are very unattractive. In a nut shell, that is why most women don't wear them unless mandatory. Oh, I almost forgot. They cost anywhere from $2-$5 for one set and rip if you sit down wrong!!

That's a good question -- To me, they're as essential to a woman's complete professional look as a good necktie is to a man's. But just as much as I appreciate ties, I'll admit that I don't often find them enjoyable to wear. I guess that it's the same for women now. It's too bad, really.
I used to date a woman who wore a suit with hose every day. I don't mind saying that it was very erotic. Now, I'm married to a woman who never ever wears them, even to formal events. I love my wife dearly, but I'd love to see her in a pair of sleek black stockings.

Seems like many women have never taken the time to try the right size/fit and try different materials (like microfiber or a high percentage of Lycra in the blend). Now graduated compression pantyhose is considered PREVENTIVE for forming varicose veins and they ease leg fatigue! You will look better at an older age. Men are rapidly discovering the benefits of PHose and as a result PHose are are rapidly becoming a unisex product. (Once a guy with a open mind tries them there is no going back). Women need to open their minds and give them another shot. Thumbs up for PHose and hot chicks.
