Laxative - which is best?!

Question:
I'm on venlafaxine and will be for at least the next 9-12 months. Despite eating lots of fibre and keeping my fluid intake high, and doing daily exercise, I'm very constipated because of the medication. Decreasing the dose is not an option.

I've been having to use laxatives and glycerin suppositories in order to go to the bathroom, and I wondered which was best for long term use? Am I better to use senna tablets on a daily basis, or to use glycerin suppositories say every other day? Which is least likely to cause problems with "dependence"?
Answers:
Both are equally dependant positive but the suppositories work faster.

I have had the same problem with some of my meds and I called my pharmacist and doctor to ask what to use. Because mine was something I could get over once my body got used to the drug, they said Senokot. Now, it isn't a problem because of my eating habits and my body is used to the drug. It sounds like you are a good track here, just call your doc and pharmacist though before you do anything else.

Good Luck!

Other Answers:
epson salts will solve it really fast, but I think mineral oil is the least likely to cause a kind of dependancy.

Ugh, you don't wanna know!

Check into magnesium citrate

We've always used "Lactulose" - which is absolutely fab - my wife was on the same medication and this worked wonders.

Dates are also quite useful (but I could never recommend prunes!)

Works brilliantly for our daughter who often decides to hold things in when she shouldn't.

PS Also tastes nice (always a bonus)

banana

aloe Vera juice

husks

I'm on venlafaxine/effexor too. It sure does nasty things to the digestive system. I don't like using drugs for the problem, so I rely on good old Raisin Bran. Never failed me yet.

None of them are.

Natural laxatives are always best. I read your other questions on this and I would recommend that you give your body a break from the laxatives for a few days, even possibly a week. Your body needs to get back to its own regularity.

Continue with the fiber, water, juices and exercise always helps too. Simply walking or biking can do wonders for this problem.

The bloating you are experiencing is also a side effect of the medication you're on. There are other meds available to treat your symptoms of depression. You may want to talk to your psychiatrist about switching meds because this has become such a problem for you.
