Is LEVAQUIN stronger then CIPROFLOXACIN?!

Question:

Answers:
Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, marketed by Ortho-McNeil under the trade name Levaquin. Chemically, levofloxacin is the S-enantiomer (L-isomer) of ofloxacin.

Levofloxacin is effective against a number of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Because of its broad spectrum of action, levofloxacin is frequently prescribed empirically for a wide range of infections (e.g. pneumonia, urinary tract infection) before the specific causal organism is known. If the causal organism is identified, levofloxacin may be discontinued and the patient may be switched to an antibiotic with a narrower spectrum of activity. Levofloxacin is not carcinogenic or teratogenic in standard tests.

Mode of action: Levofloxacin inhibits an enzyme called DNA gyrase that is an essential component of the mechanism that passes genetic information onto daughter cells when a cell divides.

Ciprofloxacin is the generic international name for the synthetic antibiotic manufactured and sold by Bayer Pharmaceutical under the brand names Cipro® and Ciproxin® (and other brand names in other markets, e.g. veterinary drugs), belonging to a group called fluoroquinolones. Ciprofloxacin is bactericidal and its mode of action depends on blocking of bacterial DNA replication by binding itself to an enzyme called DNA gyrase, which allows the untwisting required to replicate one DNA double helix into two. Notably the drug has a 100 times higher affinity for bacterial DNA gyrase than for mammalian.

My conclusion considering the above information is that they work a little differently, but one isn't necessarily "stronger" than the other. According to the above information, it would depend on which organism is causing the infection as to how effecacious one is versus the other. I hope this is helpful to you.

Other Answers:
LEVAQUIN (levofloxacin) is a synthetic broad spectrum antibacterial agent for oral and intravenous administration.

CIPRO (ciprofloxacin hydrochloride) Tablets and CIPRO (ciprofloxacin*) Oral Suspension are synthetic broad spectrum antimicrobial agents for oral administration.

They belong to the same class of antibiotics;oxyquinolones. The levaquin is a little stronger and prescribed once a day for 5 days, whereas the cipro is prescribed one tablet twice a day for 5 to 10 days.
