do I really have to finish antibiotics if I already feel better?!

Question:
I was prescribed amoxicillin after I had a root canal done. I've been taking it for 3 days and I feel fine now. However, I still have 3 days worth of pills left. Do I really have to finish them even though the pain in the tooth is all gone? It's upsetting my stomach and causing lots of side-effects, I hate taking it when it no longer seems necessary.
Answers:
my mom is a pharmacist and says, yes, you always need to finish them- the infection could still be there even though you feel better- there is a reason Dr.s prescribe the amount they do- did you tell your dr about your side effects? maybe he/she could switch you over for your remaining days

but you could be sorry if yo ustopped taking them
better be safe than be sorry

Other Answers:
yes!! but notify the dr that perscribed them to let them know of the side affects.

Yes; after 3-4 days the infection goes dormant but IS still alive. If you stop taking the antibiotics, the infection will come back and in most cases it is worse.

Please call your dentist if you are having side effects from any med. But to answer your question, yes, it IS a good idea to finish the med as prescribed. Are you eating something when you take the pill? Sometimes that med can cause intestinal issues and a yeast infection. Eat yogurt, if that is one of the problems and, as I said, take your meds with food. I am glad you are feeling a lot better!

Dr's now dont want to give people anibiotics because they dont take them the way they were intended to be taken. The anibiotics are getting weeker and weeker because the "bugs" are getting imune to them. So you should always finish your antibiotics to make sure that the bug is DEAD or non existant.

Yes, you always need to finish you antibiotics. Although you may feel better you could still have infections that isn't causing symtoms and will return if you stop them early and dont take the full dose.

Yes. If you don't completely destroy the bacteria your are taking them for, they can mutate and become immune to your antibiotic.

YES. you must finish your regimen of antibiotics to be sure that you have successfully wiped out the infection. Otherwise, the germs that haven't died will get stronger and antibiotics won't work on you when you need them later.

Amoxicillan does give you digestive problems, sorry to say. Call you doctor. Maybe you can have something else prescribed.

Yes, you should definitely finish them, even if you feel better. In every population of bacteria, there are a few that are resistant to the antibiotic. If you use the antibiotics to kill off all the rest, your body can take care of those few for you. However, if you don't finish the antibiotics your immune system can be overwhelmed, and those few bacteria who are resistant to the antibiotics will multiply, making you sick again, and this time with a disease that's resistant to the antibiotic! This is a major problem in the world today which will eventually result in making most of the antibiotics which we now have useless. Don't contribute to this problem, and give yourself every chance to get better!

I hope you feel better soon.

No, you don't! BUT I DON'T THINK THE DR. WOULD TELL YOU TOO IF HE DIDN'T THINK IT IS IN YOUR BEST INTEREST.. I AM LIKE YOU, I GET SICK TOOO AND EVEN GET YEAST INFECTIONS FROM TAKING THEM. AND I AM BACK AT THE DR.. TO CURE IT.. LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, CALL YOUR DR.. TELL THEM, BUT TAKE THEM IN THE MEAN TIME. NOTHING LIKE A TOOTHACHE OR EARACHE. OUCH!

YES!
