Question:
i have discomfort during my period, and intercourse is painful. should i have the surgery?
Answers:
You don't say how old you are. If you are older and really don't intend on having a family, the doctor may not thing it's important until they reach a certain size. Fibroids can interfere with pregnancy. Those are pretty big ones though so they have to hurt.

There are other methods to shrink fibroids and cysts. Of course there is hysterectomy, then there is endoscopy type surgery where they make a small 1 inch incision and go in and remove them if they can't do them vaginally.

I have fibroids and cystic masses, and neither one of those surgical options sounded like something I wanted. My doctor at the time pushed for a total hysterectomy! I asked about lasers and she said no, she wouldn't do it or even consider it. I opted for a different doctor. I found out there are medicines that can put you in a temporary menopausal state which cuts estrogen and therefore the fibroid dissolves. Birth control meds can help shrink them too. I'm on Lupron therapy, since that time, I've had 1 10.1 cm mass shrink to a 5, a 5.5 cm totally dissolve, and 2 smaller ones disappear too. You might want to ask about medications. There are side effects like hot flashes but it's worth it not to have surgery sometimes, it was for me.

you should see another doctor for a second opinion.

i had a fibroid removed yesterday. my body apparently thought i was in labor or something and tried to expel the fibroid thru the cervix. My DR said it was very unusual but that it does happen-the two nurse practioners in the office had never seen this before & had to watch it being removed. If you do a search about uterine fibroids it will give you more info. I found the most useful info at a site ending in gov. I dont remember the site, sorry. Good luck

Since you know you have fibroids I assume you've had an ultrasound done? Have you had a biopsy done to be sure they are not cancerous? If you haven't that should be the next thing you talk to your doctor about.

Surgery should be a last resort, after all other treatments have failed. You should talk to your doctor about medication, proestrogen should help. If you've tried drug therapy and it doesn't help the problem, then talk about surgery.
