Why is hair darker in color when it is wet?!

because there is water holding the strands of hair together-the hair is then denser, and thus appears darker. for example, i swim a lot, so my hair is a brown color, but when i swim, no one can tell that my hair is brown. when i am out of the water, and there is air separating the strands of hair, you can clearly see that it is brown, not black.
